A Lawn That Starts Below the Surface

New yard hydroseeding is how a lot of Houston homeowners get a bermuda lawn on bare ground without paying for sod. It fits a new build where the builder left a graded lot and nothing else, an older yard stripped for a pool, a foundation repair or a drainage fix, and a lawn that flooded and came back as mud and weeds. We prepare the soil, spray a hydroseed lawn in one pass and leave you with a watering plan. As new lawn installation goes, hydro seeding sits between dry grass seeding and sod on price, and it is far more forgiving on Houston clay than seed thrown from a spreader.

Why prep matters more here

Much of Houston sits on low-permeability clay-silt prairie soil. A builder lot is usually that clay, packed by trucks and smoothed with a box blade. Seed sprayed on that surface will sprout, but roots stall a couple of inches down and the lawn browns out in its first August. Before we seed, we check that the grade carries water away from the slab and does not pond in the middle of the yard, rip or till the top layer where it is packed, and bring in topsoil where the builder scraped too deep. On lots raised to meet the city's floodplain rule, the slopes off the pad are often steeper than a normal yard and get extra mulch.

The mix we spray

The slurry is water, seed, starter fertilizer, fiber mulch made from wood or paper, and a tackifier that glues it to the soil, tinted green so we can see coverage. For sunny Houston yards the seed is usually a bermuda variety. Bermuda grows actively above about 59 degrees and best between 75 and 99, which describes most of our year. It spreads by runners above ground and rhizomes below, so small thin spots tend to knit together during the first summer. It does not like dense shade, and we will say so if your yard is mostly under trees.

Sod vs hydroseed for a Houston yard

The sod vs hydroseed question usually comes down to grass type and budget. St. Augustine, the other big Houston lawn grass, has only recently had commercially viable seed, so nearly every St. Augustine lawn in town started as sod or plugs. If you want St. Augustine, sod is still the dependable route and we will tell you that up front. If you want bermuda, hydroseed gets you there for much less. In HomeGuide's numbers, sod costs $1 to $4 for each square foot laid; hydroseeding is $0.12 to $0.35. Some owners split the yard: sod in the shaded front, hydroseed across the sunny back.

Hydroseeding cost on a typical lot

Most subdivision yards around Houston have a few thousand to 10,000 square feet of open lawn. For a yard of roughly 5,000 square feet, HomeGuide's range is $1,000 to $1,750, and it says most hydroseeding companies charge a minimum of $300 to $500 or more. Angi's range for 10,000 square feet is $700 to $2,200. What moves the price on your lot is mainly prep: how much topsoil is needed, whether the ground has to be regraded, and how much slope there is. HomeGuide notes steep slopes can add 5 to 10 cents a square foot. Our quote shows prep and seeding on separate lines.

Watering in Houston heat

The first three weeks decide the lawn. Mulch holds moisture, but in June the surface still dries by midafternoon. We usually set short, light waterings several times a day until the seed is up, then fewer, deeper soakings as roots go down. Hydroseeded grass typically shows in 5 to 7 days in warm weather, and the first mow comes four to six weeks after seeding. If a storm hits in the first week, call us. A thin spot or a washed corner is easy to touch up while the rest of the lawn is still young.

Timing for a new yard

We seed new yards from April into September. April through June is the easiest stretch because the lawn gets a full summer to root before nights cool off. Midsummer seeding needs reliable irrigation or a hose routine you can keep. Late fall and winter seeding of bermuda is a poor bet in most years; if your yard is bare in December, we can mulch it to stop washing and come back to seed in spring.

New Yard Hydroseeding Questions

What does hydroseeding cost for a Houston yard?

HomeGuide puts the per-square-foot rate between $0.12 and $0.35. On a yard of about 5,000 square feet that works out to roughly $1,000 to $1,750 in its guide, with minimum fees of $300 to $500 or more. Angi's range for 10,000 square feet is $700 to $2,200. Topsoil, regrading and slope add to that, and the signed quote after we measure is what you pay.

Can I hydroseed St. Augustine?

St. Augustine has usually been planted as sod, plugs or sprigs, because commercially viable seed only recently became available. For a dependable St. Augustine lawn we still point people to sod. Bermuda is the grass we hydroseed for most sunny Houston yards.

When can my kids and dog use a freshly hydroseeded Houston yard?

Keep off it except to move hoses until after the first mow, usually four to six weeks after seeding. Light foot traffic after that is fine; heavy play is better after the lawn has had a full summer.

My builder left a bare lot. Is the soil good enough to seed?

Often it is packed clay with little topsoil left. We check it at the visit and recommend loosening, added topsoil or grading where they are needed, and we price those separately so you can decide.

Do I need a sprinkler system for a hydroseed lawn?

No, but you need a way to wet the whole area lightly several times daily until the seedlings are up and growing, usually the first two weeks or so. Hoses and timers on oscillating sprinklers work for most yards.
