Seeding Rolling Ground North of Houston

Hydroseeding in Tomball deals with ground that is not quite as flat as the rest of the Houston area. Tomball's Wikipedia page says railroad engineers noticed the town sat on the boundary between the low hills of Texas and the flat coastal plains of the Gulf, with topography that gently sloped toward the Galveston ports. That slope helped loaded trains coast downhill. It also means rain runs across bare soil here with more speed than it does on the dead-flat prairie further south.

Slope changes the mulch choice

Even a few percent of grade is enough to start rills in a fresh seedbed during a hard Gulf storm. On rolling Tomball lots we lean toward heavier wood fiber mulch with tackifier, and on longer slopes we break the run with straw wattles or a blanket strip. On flat yards a standard mulch rate is fine.

Farm and ranch land

Early settlers found open, fertile land with enough rain for farming and cattle, . Where farm or pasture ground is being turned into a yard, the soil is usually in better shape than a scraped construction pad, but it can be full of weeds and old forage grass. We often recommend a kill-down and light tilling before seeding a new lawn on former pasture.

Oil field history

The Tomball Oil Field was discovered in 1933, with production from about 5,000 feet down, and 200 wells were producing by 1935. Ground that was used for oil work may need fill and topsoil before grass will grow evenly.

Growth along 249 and the Grand Parkway

Tomball has a growing retail corridor along SH-249 and a commercial complex south of Highway 99, the Grand Parkway. New commercial pads, road shoulders and retention ponds need final stabilization before they close out, and builders need silt fence on the low sides while work goes on.

Tomball Questions

My Tomball lot has a gentle slope. Do I need a blanket?

Usually not for a gentle slope. Heavier mulch with tackifier is enough. Long or steep runs get a blanket strip or wattles to slow water.

Can you turn old pasture into a lawn?

Yes. We usually kill existing weeds and forage grass, till lightly, add topsoil where thin and then hydroseed.

Do you seed commercial pads along 249?

Yes, including shoulders, ponds and bare areas that need cover to finish a stormwater permit.

How long until I can mow?

Most warm-season hydroseed is ready for a first mow in about four to six weeks in good growing weather.
