Lawns Where Rice Once Grew

Hydroseeding in Pearland usually means putting grass on land that was open prairie and then rice fields not long ago. Pearland's Wikipedia page says the area consisted of prairie in the 1800s, was sold by developers as an agricultural Eden, and that home developers bought large tracts in the 1990s until former rice fields were filled with houses. About 83 percent of the city is now residential, which makes it one of the busiest places for new lawn work in Brazoria County.

Farm history in the soil

The early Pearland story is a warning about bare ground. The Galveston hurricanes of 1900 and 1915 destroyed most of the fruit trees and, by the city's own history, set off a period of desertification before farming recovered. Flat ground with nothing growing on it loses its surface quickly, to water or wind. On new lots we treat every scraped section as something that needs cover fast, not something that can wait for the homeowner to get around to it.

East side and west side

West Pearland, around Shadow Creek Ranch and Southern Trails, is mostly newer master-planned development with small, builder-graded yards. East Pearland has older homes and, as a Houston Chronicle writer put it, its rural roots still show. Those east-side properties often have bigger open lots, pasture edges and drainage ditches along the road. The seeding approach differs: tight yards need careful fine grading around beds and walks, while acreage needs efficient coverage and erosion control on ditch banks.

Drainage on flat ground

Rice land was leveled flat on purpose. That is good for farming and bad for a yard that needs to shed water away from a slab. Before seeding we check that the ground drops off from the foundation and carries runoff to a swale or out to the street, and correct it with topsoil if it does not.

For builders

With growth of 142 percent between 2000 and 2010, builders have kept Pearland busy. Common areas, detention ponds and lot backs all need vegetation before a project closes, and silt fence along the low edge keeps mud off streets and out of storm inlets until the grass fills in.

Pearland Questions

My new Pearland yard is flat as a table. Is that a problem?

It can be. The yard still needs a slight fall away from the slab. We check grade before seeding and fix it with topsoil where water would pond.

Do you seed larger lots on the east side?

Yes. Hydroseeding is well suited to acreage and long ditch lines because the truck covers ground quickly and evenly.

How fast does seed need to go down after the builder grades?

Ideally within days. Flat, scraped prairie soil crusts and loses its surface in heavy rain or wind if it sits bare.

Can hydroseed match a Shadow Creek Ranch HOA lawn?

We can seed the grass type the HOA calls for where seed is available, and finish edges cleanly along walks and beds.
