Seeding for Storms in Alvin

Hydroseeding in Alvin has to assume a big rain is coming. Alvin's Wikipedia page records that on July 25, 1979, Tropical Storm Claudette stalled over the city and dropped 45 inches of rain in 42 hours, including 43 inches in 24 hours, which was then the highest one-day total in American history. Not every storm is Claudette, but the point stands: a seedbed in Alvin without good mulch and good drainage is a gamble.

Mulch rates and tackifier

On a flat yard we spray a full rate of wood fiber mulch with tackifier so it forms a mat that does not float off in a downpour. On ditch banks and slopes we go to a bonded fiber matrix, which holds even when water runs across it. For channels that carry real flow, erosion control blankets pinned to the bank are the safer choice.

A lot of water inside city limits

Alvin covers about 25.6 square miles, and 1.4 square miles of that, a bit over 5 percent, is water. Bayous, ditches and ponds run through town, and many lots back onto one. Those edges are where we see the most erosion and where new grass does the most good.

Ranch roots and an odd shape

The area was first settled for bull ranches in the mid-1800s, and the town grew along the Santa Fe Railroad; it is the oldest incorporated city in Brazoria County, from 1893. In 1960 Alvin annexed a 100-foot-wide, 137-mile-long strip to keep other cities from annexing around it. Inside those lines are older in-town lots, former pasture and newer subdivisions, each with different soil conditions.

Storm repair

Damage from Hurricane Ike in 2008 closed the Alvin library for repairs in 2010. After storms like that, lawns need debris removal, rut repair and reseeding. We handle that work along with new lawns.

Alvin Questions

Will hydroseed wash away in an Alvin thunderstorm?

Not with the right mulch. We use a heavy fiber mulch with tackifier on yards and bonded fiber matrix or blankets on slopes and ditches.

My lot backs onto a drainage ditch. Can you seed the bank?

Yes. Ditch banks are a good fit for bonded fiber matrix or blankets, depending on how much water the ditch carries.

Do you seed old pasture lots in Alvin?

Yes. We usually clear weeds and old forage grass and loosen the soil before hydroseeding.

Storm cleanup crews rutted my Alvin yard. Can that be reseeded?

Yes. We level ruts, add topsoil and reseed damaged areas.
