Lawns under the canopy

Hydroseeding in The Woodlands, TX

A town planned around its trees. Grass here competes with pine roots and shade, so seed choice matters.

Grass Where the Forest Was Kept

Hydroseeding in The Woodlands is different from seeding the open prairie south of Houston, because the community was built to keep its forest. Wikipedia notes that The Woodlands is in a heavily forested area and much of the community has retained trees for shade and decoration. The original plan drew on the environmental design ideas of landscape architect Ian McHarg, author of Design With Nature. For a lawn that means less sun, more roots and more leaf and needle litter than most Houston-area yards.

Shade changes the seed mix

Full-sun Bermuda struggles under a pine and hardwood canopy. Shaded yards here usually do better with more shade-tolerant grasses, or with a planned mix of turf in the bright areas and mulch or groundcover under the heaviest canopy. Before we quote, we walk the yard at midday to see where sun actually lands. Spraying seed into deep shade wastes money.

Protecting roots during prep

Trees are part of what people pay for in The Woodlands, so grading and tilling have to stay out of root zones as much as possible. We keep heavy equipment off the drip line, hand-rake topsoil near trunks instead of filling, and avoid piling soil against bark. Hydroseeding helps here because the slurry is sprayed from a hose, so no sod pallets or mowers have to roll over roots.

Spring Creek ground

The terrain is mostly flat, but Wikipedia records elevation changes from 125 to 175 feet between Spring Creek and Flintridge Drive. Lots that drop toward the creek corridor, which is protected as part of the George Mitchell Nature Preserve and the Spring Creek Greenway, can shed soil quickly once vegetation is removed. Those slopes get a heavier fiber mulch or erosion control blanket and, during construction, a silt fence line on the low side.

Parks and common areas

The Woodlands has 151 urban parks, and every resident is within a ten-minute walk of one. Village associations and commercial owners need worn turf renewed along paths and fields, and new pads near the Town Center need cover after construction.

The Woodlands Questions

Will hydroseed grow under my pine trees?

In light shade, yes, with a shade-tolerant seed. Under dense canopy grass rarely thrives, and we will say so instead of selling you seed that will thin out.

Do pine needles hurt a new lawn?

A thick needle layer blocks light and smothers seedlings. Rake it off before seeding and keep it cleared while the grass fills in.

Can you seed near big trees without damaging roots?

Yes. We avoid deep tilling and heavy fill in root zones, spread thin topsoil by hand near trunks and spray from the hose.

My lot slopes toward Spring Creek. What do you use?

A bonded fiber mulch or a blanket on the steepest part, plus silt fence below any bare soil during construction.

Do you work for village associations?

Yes. Worn fields, path edges and common areas can be overseeded or reseeded in sections.
