Seeding Around Protected Trees

Hydroseeding in Magnolia takes place in a city that writes tree protection into its rules. Magnolia's Wikipedia page says the city is named for the magnolia trees that grow in the area, and that its 2015 Unified Development Code includes restrictions protecting live oak and magnolia trees. For homeowners and builders, that means grading, tilling and seeding near those trees has to be planned so roots are not damaged.

Root-safe prep

Most tree roots live in the top foot or so of soil and spread well past the branch tips. Deep tilling, cutting grade or piling fill over that zone can kill a tree slowly. Near protected trees we skip the tiller, rake only the surface, add no more than a thin layer of topsoil and spray seed by hose instead of driving equipment across the root zone. Hydroseeding is one of the gentler ways to get grass started around big trees.

Shade and grass choice

Mature oaks and magnolias throw heavy shade. Bermuda wants full sun and thins out under a canopy. We map sun and shade on each lot and suggest seed to match, and where shade is too deep we recommend mulch or beds under the tree rather than a struggling lawn.

From Mink Prairie to a growing city

The area was first settled around 1845 as Mink Prairie, and the town moved north in 1902 to meet the new railroad. In 2013 the city adopted a 20-year comprehensive plan, "Magnolia on the Move," to manage expected business and residential growth. New subdivisions around the city mean new lots that need cover, and the same tree rules apply to them.

Builder sites

Where lots are being cleared, silt fence on the low side and tree protection fencing around kept trees go up before grading. Once the grade is set, seed and mulch go down quickly so bare soil is not washing toward drainage.

Magnolia Questions

Can you seed under a protected live oak?

Yes, with care. We avoid tilling and heavy fill in the root zone and spray seed from the hose. Deep shade may be better left as mulch.

Will Bermuda grow on my shaded Magnolia lot?

Only in the sunny parts. Shaded areas need a more shade-tolerant grass or a different groundcover.

Does a new build in Magnolia need silt fence?

Construction sites that disturb soil generally need sediment controls. We set silt fence before grading and seed after.

How thick can topsoil be near tree roots?

Keep it thin, about an inch or so. Thick fill over roots can starve them of air.
