Rebuilding Lawns After the Water
Hydroseeding in Friendswood often follows a flood. The city's Wikipedia page says Friendswood was devastated by Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and hit again by Hurricane Beryl in 2024, and that major flooding comes from the rise of Clear Creek near neighborhoods such as Polly Ranch. After that kind of water, yards are covered in silt, scoured down to clay or torn up by remodel crews. A new lawn has to start with cleaning up what the flood and the cleanup left behind.
Raised houses, new slopes
According to the same page, residents began building houses above ground to stay out of floodwater. Raised slabs and new pier-and-beam houses leave fill slopes and bare skirts of soil around the foundation. Those slopes shed water fast. We grade them to a smooth, even pitch, spread topsoil, and hydroseed with a tackifier so the mulch grips. On a short, steep band next to a driveway, a blanket is often the better choice.
What flood silt does to grass
Flood deposits can bury existing turf under a crust of fine silt that seals the surface. Thin deposits can be raked and overseeded. Thick layers need to be scraped off or worked in before seeding, or the new seed sits on top of a hard, airless skin.
Quaker farm roots
Through the 1940s Friendswood was a small Quaker farming community of fewer than 500 people that grew and preserved Magnolia figs. After 1950 the farms gave way to subdivisions as Houstonians moved in, and the city incorporated in 1960. Many neighborhoods are now 40 to 60 years old, with mature trees and lawns that have thinned out over time. Overseeding and patch seeding are common requests in those older sections.
Two school districts, one creek
Clear Creek is the line between the Galveston County and Harris County sides of town. Whichever side you are on, runoff from a bare lot goes toward the creek, so we keep silt fence on construction and remodel sites until grass is up.

Friendswood Questions
Can you seed over flood silt?
Thin silt can be raked in and overseeded. A thick crust should be removed or tilled in first, or the new seed will not root properly.
What goes on the slope around a raised house?
A smooth grade, a few inches of topsoil and hydroseed with tackifier. On very steep, short slopes we use an erosion control blanket.
My older Friendswood lawn is thin under oaks. Overseed or start over?
If more than half the turf is healthy, overseeding is usually enough. Bare, compacted areas may need aeration and topsoil first.
Do you do rebuild sites after a flood?
Yes. We install silt fence during the rebuild and seed the disturbed yard once construction traffic is done.
